Is sleeping hot a firmness or a material problem?

Firm or soft usually isn't what makes a bed sleep hot. Heat builds when the sleep surface doesn't let air and moisture move — a question of material and construction more than of firmness rating. The two get tangled because the conforming foams that make a surface feel soft also hug closer and leave less room for airflow. So if you're waking up hot, changing firmness usually won't fix it; changing how the surface breathes can help. And not everything is the bed: room temperature, bedding, and how warm you personally run all play a part.

Why the two get confused

Ask around and you'll hear both theories: "firm beds sleep cooler" and "my soft mattress is why I'm hot." There's a real observation buried in there, but the label is wrong. What people are noticing isn't firmness itself — it's contact. A surface you sink into touches more of your body, holds warm air against your skin, and gives moisture fewer places to go. A surface you lie on top of touches less of you and lets more air move.

Conforming foams happen to do both things at once: they create the soft, close feel, and they slow the movement of air. So softness and heat often show up together — not because soft causes hot, but because the closer hug and the reduced airflow come from the same construction. Soft vs breathable is the real axis; firmness is just standing next to it.

If your complaint is heat, buy for airflow; if your complaint is a board-firm surface, that's a different problem with a different answer.
