Can a mattress topper be both soft and cooling?

You can balance softness and breathability, but you should be careful with any topper that claims to maximize both. The soft, cradled feel comes from foam that hugs closer and touches more of you; staying comfortable through a warm night depends on air and moisture moving through the surface. That same closer hug can work against airflow. So instead of shopping for "plush and cooling" as one promise, decide which problem is costing you more sleep: a bed that feels too firm, or a bed that holds too much heat.

Where "soft" comes from

A topper softens a bed by changing the contact. A firm surface meets your body at a few concentrated points; a conforming layer lets those points settle in, touches more of you, and spreads the same weight across more of the surface. That closer hug is the softness — it isn't a finish or a fabric, it's contact area.

Which matters here, because everything that increases contact also wraps the surface more completely around you — and that has a cost the front of the box doesn't mention.

Where "cooling" actually comes from

Cooling is the word people search for; airflow is the thing that matters through the night. You shed heat and moisture while you sleep, and the question is whether the surface lets them move away or stores them where you're lying. A build that breathes helps heat and moisture move through the surface. It does not make the bed cold, and you should be wary of any promise built only around first-touch chill. A cool-to-the-touch cover can feel convincing for the first few minutes, but the night is decided by what happens after your body has been on the surface for hours. Both are easy to demonstrate. What is harder to demonstrate is hour four of a warm night, when the surface has been wrapped around the body long enough for airflow to matter. That is where the trade shows up, and it is why the construction matters more than the label.

How to actually choose

Start from the complaint that wakes you up, not the one that sounds nice to also have. Builds do exist between the poles — softer layers that breathe better, breathable layers with more give — and some balance the trade more gracefully than others. A middle build is a compromise on both ends, which is a fine thing to choose as long as you're choosing it knowingly.
