What Actually Happens
One morning, it isn't the bed you bought.
No single night changes a mattress. It happens slowly, and mostly out of sight.
A mattress can lose support before it looks broken: repeated compression can create material fatigue in high-load areas, often including the load-bearing center third, so support can fade before visible sag appears.
That's why an empty bed can look flat and still feel different once you lie on it. How a mattress looks and how it holds you are two separate questions.
LOWER-BACK SUPPORT
If your back is part of why you're shopping, look beyond firmness.
For the mattress side of the question, separate surface feel from structural support. Lumbar support is about what the structure underneath is doing through the center area of the mattress.
Body weight concentrates in the center third of the mattress during sleep, making it the first area to lose structural support over time.
It felt wrong from the start.
Think first about fit and surface feel.

Check the foundation and the mattress itself. If morning discomfort showed up around the time the middle of your mattress began to dip, the mattress is worth checking.

FIRMNESS VS LUMBAR SUPPORT
A firmer mattress isn't automatically a more supportive one.
Firmness describes the resistance you feel as a mattress compresses; support describes how the full structure manages your weight and controls settling under load. They are related but not the same: a firm-feeling mattress can still develop uneven support loss, while a softer-feeling mattress can remain stable underneath.
If lumbar support matters to you, look past the firmness label and ask what the structure through the center third is actually doing.
So we talk about them separately: how the surface feels, and what the structure underneath is doing. Essential™ and Signature™ share the structure underneath; the difference is the surface on top.
WHY THE CENTER MATTERS
We reinforce the area that carries the most load.
Research on used coil-spring mattresses found that the heavily loaded center could respond differently from less-loaded areas even when unloaded height looked similar.
We treat the center third as a distinct design problem.
That is one reason we chose to reinforce the center third.
The study did not test our mattresses or how long any mattress lasts.

This is where our lumbar support comes from.
In the center third, StasisLayer™ uses 2.3 mm tempered-steel pocket coils. The zones on either side use 2.0 mm, so the center wire is 15% thicker. The reinforcement is in the coil structure underneath; the comfort surface above remains continuous and unzoned. Three rows of 2.3 mm coils run around the perimeter, with no border wire.

What's the difference between Signature™ and Essential™?
Both are built around the same StasisLayer™ core — the reinforced center third shared by Essential™ and Signature™. The structural commitment is identical.
Signature extends that commitment with a deeper comfort layer above the core.
Essential keeps the same StasisLayer™ core, with a firmer, more grounded comfort layer — the foundational Manchot experience at a lower entry point.
If you prefer a firmer, more grounded surface, Essential is where it starts. If you prefer a deeper, more cushioned surface with more give, Signature is built for that.
What does “lumbar support” mean on a Manchot mattress?
For Manchot, lumbar support means reinforced structural support through the center third of the mattress. In Essential™, the center third uses 2.3 mm tempered-steel pocket coils, compared with 2.0 mm coils in the adjacent zones. The comfort surface above remains continuous and unzoned.
We use “lumbar support” to describe the design and structure of the mattress, not a medical outcome.
Why does Manchot focus so much on the center third?

What's the difference between the 12 Inch and 14 Inch?
Nothing structural. Both use the same layers, the same materials, and the same StasisLayer™ reinforced center — the 14 Inch is simply built taller, with the foam and coils each a little higher. Choose the one that suits the height you want your bed to sit at.
One practical note: the 14 Inch usually needs deep-pocket fitted sheets.
What kind of bed frame do I need?
Essential™ works on platform beds, slatted frames (with gaps no wider than 3 inches), box springs, or directly on the floor. We don't recommend frames with wider slats — the center third needs continuous support underneath.
How is the mattress shipped?
Essential™ is compressed, rolled, and securely packaged. Manchot selects the carrier and delivery method based on the product's size and weight, destination, and service availability. Standard delivery is free within the contiguous U.S. Larger shipments may require carrier coordination.
How long does it take to fully expand?
Most of the expansion happens within the first hour, and the mattress is ready to sleep on the same night. Full structural settling takes 24–48 hours.
Will there be a smell when I unbox it?
A mild new-product scent is normal for any compressed foam mattress and usually clears within a few days. Our foams are CertiPUR-US® certified.
