Why does a mattress trap heat?
Because you keep producing heat and moisture, and the sleep surface influences what happens to them. Through the night, your body releases warmth and moisture into the area where you meet the mattress. If that area lets air move, heat and moisture can move away and the bed stays closer to neutral. If the surface holds air still — dense materials, deep contact, limited pathways out — your own output can build up around you, and by the early hours the bed may feel like it is generating heat. It isn't. It is holding more of yours.
The bed doesn't make heat — it manages yours
A mattress has no heat source. What it has is a boundary area: the place where your body, bedding, and sleep surface meet, and where warmth and humidity can build up over time. Whether that area stays comfortable comes down largely to airflow — can warm, damp air move away, and can the surface avoid holding it in place? Everything a bed does about temperature happens in that exchange, which is why two mattresses in the same room can produce very different nights.

What slows the air down
Three things usually work together. The first is material structure. Dense foams with tighter internal structures tend to hold air still, while more open constructions leave more room for movement. This is one reason memory foam has a reputation for sleeping warm, especially when it closely conforms around the body.
The second is contact depth. The closer a surface hugs you, the more of your body it wraps and the less open space remains at the contact. Softness and airflow can pull against each other, which is a physical trade-off rather than a flaw. The third is everything above the mattress: sheets, duvets, and protectors. Even a breathable build has to work through whatever sits on top of it, so bedding and protectors can close pathways the mattress left open.
Why "cooling" and "breathable" are different promises
A cooling surface works by feeling cool to the touch — a temporary sensation that fades as the temperature difference between your skin and the surface narrows. A breathable build works by helping heat and moisture move away for as long as you're on it. One is a first impression; the other is a mechanism that matters later in the night. Neither is dishonest, but they answer different questions, and choosing between them is its own decision.

Why does the heat show up in the early hours, not at bedtime?
Because trapping is cumulative. At bedtime the surface is closer to room temperature; it takes time for heat and moisture to build up around you. A bed that traps heat may feel fine at first and stuffy later.
Does firmness affect heat?
Only indirectly. Firmness itself does not move air, but softer surfaces can let you settle deeper, which increases contact and leaves less open space around the body. The heat effect comes from the amount of contact, not the firmness rating by itself.
Can a hot-sleeping mattress be fixed from the top?
Sometimes — if the problem lives near the sleep surface, a more breathable top layer can help reopen the pathway. If the heat comes from a deeper, dense construction, a surface change may have a smaller effect. Where the problem lives decides what can reach it.
